Opinion: Spring hunting and female genital mutilation - Erin Stewart Tanti

Note to readers: I know that this definitely is not the most subtle way to tackle our current issue on spring hunting. But despite certain misconceptions posed by the hunters as excuses for what they are doing, with my hand on my heart I admit that I couldn’t care less.

Now, the first and most obvious reaction to the above title would be either discrete giggling or utter scandal. Secondly, you would probably ask what these totally contrasting aspects have in common.

A couple of weeks ago, I would have reacted just like you, tutted and flicked over to the sports page. However, after hearing an interview on the radio, where the journalist was taking comments from hunters present on the day of the protest, it finally hit me.
Both hunting and female genital mutilation are still carried on today, because they have the pitiful excuse of tradition to back them up.

To anybody who thinks likewise to whoever it was that said this outrageous comment, please realise that although hunting may be classed as a tradition, as seen in the case of female genital mutilation, that doesn’t imply that it is the right way of conduct.
